Trees and People Coalition
Dear Friends,
After years working together to create a stronger, more comprehensive tree code for Seattle, we were stunned at the outcome of Tree Ordinance 126821 passed by the City Council this year. We realized we needed to push back hard, and that it was going to involve a legal challenge and lobbying. Trees and People Coalition, along with two allied groups, filed a petition; now, in the upcoming two months, our petition is scheduled to go before the State of Washington Growth Management Hearings Board. The urgency is real, and so are the legal fees.
Please become a tree-mendous supporter, by investmening in our effort. Trees and People Coalition is the key fundraiser of the legal battle, and we must raise $75,000 to cover those and related expenses.
We’ve all read the stories about how Seattle lost another 255 acres of tree cover on public property. We’ve studied the science that shows that trees improve physical and mental health, absorb carbon dioxide and other pollutants, and reduce the “heat island effect”. But recent policy changes at the state and local levels are making it harder and harder to protect existing trees. The development of the tree ordinance was hijacked by the Master Builders Association of King and Snohomish Counties, and the City of Seattle completely ignored its own Urban Forestry Commission.
We strongly believe the tree ordinance is inconsistent with Seattle’s comprehensive plan. As well, we believe the City’s established policies were violated. To address those issues, we will be conducting an analysis of the regulatory framework to ensure increased tree canopy; lobby for the adoption of amendments to strengthen the tree code; and engage in meaningful work leading to an improved tree code. For that, we need your help.
Trees and People Coalition works to ensure people in all neighborhoods in Seattle have trees close to where they live. Our mission: to educate and engage all people to grow and protect urban trees for the benefit of all Seattle communities. We have formalized our organization, are registered with Washington’s Secretary of State as a nonprofit, and we have a fiscal sponsor, so your contribution may be tax deductible. Like the trees around us that thrive and enhance the lives of our community members, the Trees and People Coalition will grow and work toward safekeeping our urban forests.
During this glorious holiday season, trees of all types are used by many cultures to celebrate. In that spirit, we ask you to please make a generous contribution to Trees and People Coalition https://donorbox.org/seattle-needs-trees . Follow us on Facebook.
